These paintings are several of the artworks of Hungarian artist Melitta Csorján that will accompany my upcoming storybook about a little kitten who longed to become human — a psychologist’s attempt to speak to children about longing, friendship, and finding one’s way home to oneself, written decades ago.

Each piece carries Melitta’s real fingerprint — that unmistakable Central and Eastern European emotional intensity – which is both art and raw feeling. And each painting is Melitta’s own artistic response to the story.

There is also a personal thread woven into this collaboration: Melitta and I were born and raised in the same small Romanian town. We attended the same school, walked the same streets, and shared the same early landscape.

Life took us on different paths — she moved to Hungary, and I eventually moved from Hungary to Australia.

This book brings us together again decades later, across continents, to draw from our shared roots and create something new.
